The hypocrisy of George Miller on Indian gaming

Rep George Miller (CA-07) is a hypocrite and a coward. He can stick his nose into every aspect of Bay Area life and California politics, but pretends to remain neutral on the issue of Nevada style Indian Casino gaming at Pt Molate in North Richmond, California.

In 2000, he finessed support for Indian gaming in San Pablo into federal legislation; remember how livid Senator Feinstein was? Even so, Miller then opposed the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians when they tried to expand that casino when it proposed an expansion to 2,500 slot machines.

This does not sound like a “hands off” approach to local issues.

Now that the Guidiville Band wants to build a mega casino at Pt Molate, including two hotels, convention center and record numbers of slots, the Congressman, known Bitch of Nancy Pelosi, plays dumb, like Jerry McNerney (CA-11), claiming members of Congress and the Senate don’t have a role in such a local process.

Even in its dotage, the moribund Contra Costa Times can see through that,

Coming from Miller’s office that’s on one hand laughable and on the other hand appalling. If anyone in Congress has demonstrated that members can have a role, it’s Miller. In the case of the Lytton Band, no one else had more influence enabling the project and then curbing its size. But now the congressman, who has mastered Washington in his 34-year career, suddenly pretends he’s helpless.

Perhaps he should consult with Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, who at least have taken the time to sign a letter to the Interior Department opposing the plan.
