This forum is designed for elder justice professionals, advocates and community leaders to participate in a lively discussion about Contra Costa County’s response to elder financial abuse. The panel will take place Wednesday, April 23, 2008 9:30 - 12 noon at the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers 651 Pine St. in Martinez.

Panelists will include:
- Hon. David B. Flinn, Contra Costa County Superior Court judge
- Lt. David Chilimidos, Concord Police Department
- Julie Peck, Manager, Adult Protective Services
- Virginia George, Director, Elder Law Clinic, John F. Kennedy University
- A representative from the District Attorney’s office
- Moderated by Shirley Krohn, Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council member

The discussion will address how professionals view elder abuse, what obstacles they face in addressing elder financial abuse, and what improvements and solutions they propose.

“Unfortunately, seniors in our community often suffer from physical violence, emotional abuse, and neglect. Frequently the abuse comes from those who are entrusted with their care and well-being. We must make a commitment to protect our most vulnerable senior citizens from this neglect and abuse,” stated Contra Costa County Supervisor Susan Bonilla. For more information contact Lisa Diangson, Area Agency on Aging (925) 335-8767.

The Contra Costa Times reports that Contra Costa supervisors approved a non-binding resolution Tuesday calling on subprime mortgage lenders to hold off on foreclosures for six months. Supervisors Susan Bonilla and John Gioia proposed the voluntary measure. According to the Times Alameda and Contra Costa are among the 25 hardest-hit counties in the nation when it comes to foreclosures, according to a November report by the Center for Responsible Lending. Among the most-affected East Bay cities are Antioch, San Pablo, Pittsburg, Brentwood, Oakley and Oakland.

This topic needs a lot more discussion and full disclosure. At the national level, there is not a little evidence that suggests the crocodile tears and bad legislation lawmakers are proposing on behalf of the hapless poor that took on more house than they can afford, are more designed to help out well connected financial institutions, investors, and campaign contributors.

The question is, are voters witnessing the same sleight-of-hand here in Contra Costa when the SF Chronicle has documented that at least one out of five foreclosures are investment properties! And it’s probably even higher in Antioch, Brentwood, and Disco Bay.

So let’s bail out the gamblers—including the lenders—while bemoaning the fate of the poor? Sweet!

And, given the list of cities hit hardest in Contra Costa County, why are Supervisors John Gioia (D-I) and Susan Bonilla (D-IV) carrying this bucket of corporate largesse, instead of Democrat Federal Glover (D-V) and DeSaulnier-Republican, Mary Piepho (D-III)?
