Think “Concord Senior Center” and one very special event that comes to mind is the annual Hawaiian Fusion featuring an evening of exotic Polynesian entertainment and “ono” (delicious) Hawaiian cuisine. This year’s 6th Annual Hawaiian fundraising event is being held at the Centre Concord located at 5298 Clayton Road and stars Herb Ohta, Jr. in concert with special guests David Kamakahi with his dynamic ukulele style, and singer/songwriter/composer Jon Yamasato. The trio will showcase Ohta’s exciting new CD during the group’s performance.

As an added treat, the award-winning KaUa Tuahine Polynesian Dance Company, directed by Mahealani Uchiyama, will also perform that night. This year’s dining fare includes such Island favorites as Kalua Pork, Laulau, Teriyaki Chicken, Lomi Salmon, Macaroni Salad, Rice, Poi, Cake, and Fresh Pineapple, and Sweet Potato.

The 2007 Hawaiian Fusion is being co-sponsored by Meals on Wheels by Senior Outreach Services of Contra Costa County. A portion of the proceeds will go toward providing more than 20,000 hot nutritious meals at the Center and another 25,000 meals delivered to those home-bound seniors in the coming year.

“This event also highlights the Concord Senior Center’s Scholarship program,” says Avis Connolly, Concord Senior Center Program Manager. “The Center offers enriching educational and specialized instructional classes in addition to day trips for seniors. A share of the events proceeds will provide the funds for more than a hundred scholarships to those seniors who cannot afford to participate in those programs. A special appeal is being made to corporations and businesses to contribute to this worthy cause.”

Cost of the event is $45.00 per person or $400.00 for a table of ten. An additional $5.00 per ticket will be assessed after August 15. Tickets for the 2007 Hawaiian Fusion may be purchased at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle, by mailing a check payable to the City of Concord or by phoning (925) 671-3320. All seats are reserved and based on a “first come – first serve” basis.
