Willie Brown says Democrats in trouble

Willie Brown, former San Francisco Mayor and speaker of the California Assembly, is the savviest politician in California, if not the country. His September 7 oped in the Chron takes a fresh look at current thinking about the current 2008 presidential race. Brown starts off, “The Democrats are in trouble. Sarah Palin has totally changed the dynamics of this campaign.”

Brown says, “Democrats are on defense. And we don’t do well on defense….She didn’t have to prove she was “of the people.” She really is the people.”

And he had some sage advice for John and Cindy McCain: “By the way, a note to John McCain: Get rid of the suits. McCain is best with an open collar, his sleeves rolled up and in a Western shirt. He doesn’t come off well in suits at all. They make him look old. And Cindy - keep the hair up.”

The National organization of The Wellness Community was featured recently on ABC News. The Wellness Community San Francisco/East Bay is located in Walnut Creek. The local organization’s own info clips have been runnning lately on local cable.

SF Tenants Union to rally against Prop 98, Mar 15

Looks like the California League of Cities has begun to stir up the huddled masses and Spartacus Youth Leagues around town into supporting Proposition 99’s faux eminent domain reform. California’s redevelopment movers and shakers love things just the way they are, so the plan is to confuse the ballots and rake Prop 98’s reform over the coals.

The San Francisco Tenant’s Union, using typical Marxist class-struggle slogans, has planned a demonstration to “fight back” against Prop 98 for March 15. They claim Prop 98 will end rent control for hundreds of thousands of poor folks in San Francisco and other deteriorating communities elsewhere in California.

This I know, there are two sure ways to create less affordable housing while increasing substandard housing and that is to subsidize housing and/or establish rent controls. Take profits away from builders or landowners and they walk away from improving property. Overtime, as in Manhattan and San Francisco, such policies create a dumb bell society of ghetto dwellers too poor to leave and the tuxedoed super rich who can afford to step over the homeless on their way to the opera on Van Ness.

Fasten your seatbelt. The agitprop being drummed up by the developer-supported redevelopment community to confuse eminent domain and defeat Prop 98 will be intense.
