MDUSD school board candidates are posting their candidacy statements and answering questions posted on the site. There are four candidates running for two contested seats, including Sherry Whitmarsh, Jeff Adams, and incumbents, Gary Eberhart, and April Treece.

Erik Nunn dies in Nevada plane crash

Several independent sources say Erik Nunn died in a plane crash Saturday afternoon in Nevada. He was a candidate for a runoff election against incumbent Federal Glover for the Contra Costa Supervisor seat for District 5. Sources say Erik and his wife were en route to Las Vegas to meet with Las Vegas. Nunn earned his pilot’s license in 2006.

This sad event throws into doubt the status of the runoff election; whether Nunn would remain on the ballot or not. One source indicated that Section 8807 of California’s Election Code indicates that if a vacancy occurs for a non-partisan race, regardless of when the vacancy occurs, the next highest vote recipient’s name, in this case Gary Agopian, would appear on the ballot. Updates on this tragedy and ballot outcome will be forthcoming.

Abram Wilson fundraiser for Assembly D-15 campaign, Mar 13

San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson’s campaign for the Republican nomination for Assembly District 15 announced it will hold a fundraiser on March 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Canyon View Dining Hall at 680 Bollinger Canyon Way in San Ramon. Sheriff Charlie Plummer endorses Scott Kamena for Assembly (AD-15)

Law enforcement legend Sheriff Charlie Plummer has announced his decision to back Republican Scott Kamena for State Assembly. Plummer with 54 years of service, served five terms as the Sheriff of Alameda County from 1987 to 2007, and is a statewide leader in law enforcement. “I have spent my life protecting our community from crime,” said Plummer. “Scott understands what it will take at the state level to keep families and neighborhoods safe. Simply put, nobody will be tougher on crime.”

Local candidates announce state and county campaign news

Scott Kamena’s campaign for the Republican nomination for the 15th State Assembly race announced this week that Councilman Jeff Williams, became the fifth member of the Livermore City Council to publicly endorse Kamena’s campaign, marking the first unanimous City Council endorsement in the race for the 15th Assembly District. Livermore is the largest city in the sprawling district, which encompasses portions of Alameda, Contra Costa, Sacramento and San Joaquin counties. The endorsement of the City Council follows the unanimous endorsement of the Livermore Area Recreation and Parks District to which Kamena has been
elected twice.

Meanwhile, the Guy Houston campaign for the Contra Costa County Supervisor seat (D-III), announced it finished 2007 with $187,189 in total contributions. Incumbent Contra Costa Supervisor, Mary Piepho, raised $15,073 in the last six months since Houston announced his run for Supervisor. Houston also has garnered key county endorsements from Treasurer Bill Polleck, Assessor Gus Kramer and Sheriff Warren Rupf.

Livermore Parks Director and Assembly candidate Scott Kamena reported $361,751 in total contributions for 2007, more than all of his opponents for the third reporting period in a row. To date, Kamena says he has collected the vast majority of his contributions from sources within the 15th Assembly District. In addition to his lead in fundraising, Kamena’s campaign says it has garnered more district endorsements than any other Republican or Democrat running for the highly profile 15th Assembly seat.

Green Party Presidential Debate in San Francisco, Jan 13

A former Democratic Party member of Congress, a consumer protection icon, a professor, and an environmental engineer are scheduled to appear on January 13, at the only live debate between candidates on the Green Party’s California ballot for President of the United States.

The debate will be held Sunday, January 13 at 2 p.m. at the Herbst Theater/Veterans Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue. “Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan, a former Democrat - will co-moderate the debate.

Six-time Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who is not yet an announced candidate, university professor Jared Ball, and environmental engineer Kent Mesplay, will participate in “Campaign 2008: A Presidential Debate that Matters.” Sheehan, running as an independent Congressional candidate against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco, will be joined by other prominent progressive elected officials, yet to be announced. Wilson leads poll for Assembly D-15 Republican nomination

A recent study by Probolsky Research shows that among the candidates in the race for the Republican Nomination in the 15th Assembly District, Mayor Abram Wilson has the highest name identification among the voters. In fact his positives are more than two-to one over the next opponent. One campaign analyst monetized the results as being worth “at least $100,000 in future campaign contributions.”

Figuring his campaign was good for it, Abram Wilson, the mayor of San Ramon, gave his campaign $95,000 in May and June. And, according to a recent SacBee report, Robert Rao, a retired auto-dealership executive, has also given $100,000 to his campaign for the East Bay seat currently held by termed-out Assemblyman Guy Houston. Said Rao “I am going to spend whatever it takes to get there.”
