Why the long face on Alaska Senator Ted Stevens when his legacy lives on in Contra Costa County politics? Matier and Ross ran a story today on the golden hills of Diablo Valley. At least the gold of Independent Expenditures for political candidates. Those helping Democrat Buchanan (and bashing Republican Wilson) include teachers, nurses, police unions and professional engineers —hoping Democrats invoke eminent domain so they can design and build transit villages—for a total of almost $1 million. Wilson has received $319,000 from the California Chamber of Commerce and other business interests.

The political he-said she-said carnage continues in the Assembly 15 race as the campaign of Republican Abram Wilson issues a video clip that purports to document
Democrat Joan Buchanan’s support for the Peripheral Canal. During a recent candidate debate, moderated by Lisa Vorderbrueggen, Buchanan denied the charge, but Wilson waved a piece of paper as proof and now has produced this video clip as documentation.

Democrat Joan Buchanan’s campaign for Assembly seat 15 issued a vague e-mail blast Tuesday afternoon crying foul against Republican Abram Wilson’s campaign. The e-mail cites a close Buchanan supporter who charges Wilson with using a recent mailing and robocall to spread false charges against Buchanan’s actions as a San Ramon School Board Member. Buchanan’s e-mail seems to purposely leave out what he said she said. “Not so fast,” says Wilson’s campaign, who say it is a matter of public record that Buchanan voted to allow San Ramon students access to sex, drug, and hate websites, as well as allow R-rated films to be shown in class rooms. Furthermore, sources familiar with the Wilson campaign say, both the Contra Costa Times and Grand Jury back up Wilson’s charge that Ms. Buchanan “actively misinformed the public and mishandled Measure D school bond monies.”

Buchanan wins endorsement of the Livermore Independent

Citing development concerns, the Livermore Independent, endorsed Democrat Joan Buchanan for the 15th District Assembly seat to be vacated by termed out Republican, Guy Houston. According to the editorial, “The 15th District assembly member will be a player in the North Livermore issue. Buchanan is fully committed to urban growth boundaries and to the principles of Alameda County Measure D (2000) and the Livermore urban growth boundary initiative (2002). Moreover, she supports the acquisition of recycled water for North Livermore agriculture.” The Independent said, “Abram Wilson is by and large pro-developer on issues like this. As mayor, he has been a force[d] to open up rural lands to urbanization.”

California legislature and unions block volunteer help

Look for the Union Label, California! Dan Weintraub reports that the California State Legislature has held up an exemption for volunteers that want to help public works projects that receive government money; for instance library, hospital, and school field trip volunteers, to name just a few. Democratic Assembly opponents, looking to protect public employee unions, have held up a vote for an exemption for volunteers (Assembly Bill 2537) by requiring a $4,000,000 study to make sure libraries just aren’t trying to cut down on union labor hours. With the budget the way it is, such an outrageous price tag for a study that won’t cost that much unless Senator Perata does it will not even get to the floor for a vote. Since we know Messers DeSaulnier and Torlakson can’t explain this one to their dumbfounded constituents, perhaps Assembly District 15 candidates Abram Wilson or Joan Buchanan can make sense of this buffoonery?

15th Assembly district candidates trade partisan endorsements; Bass ousts Parra

The two major candidates for the open Assembly-15 seat, traded endorsement announcements last week that surprised no one and bordered on non-news. Republican Abram Wilson announced the support of Contra Costa County Auditor, Steve Ybarra, while Democrat Joan Buchanan, announced the support of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputies union. These ho-hum announcements run along the normal and expected faultline of Contra Costa partisan politics and should come as no surprise.

More interesting was Assembly Speaker Democrat Karen Bass, dismissing Democrat Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, from her office to a cubbyhole across the street for not voting for the Democrat stalemate budget. “Now that’s news!” Paul Harvey Jr. would crow. And it’s news that does not bode well for the voters in the Diablo Valley who have to wonder who’s interests Joan Buchanan will represent if she defeats Abram Wilson, the district’s or Karen Bass? Ask them both when Karen Bass headlines a Buchanan fundraiser, September 10.
