Antioch Library awarded for innovative programs

The Antioch Library’s innovative Wednesday Club for adults received a $1000 award from the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies/National Organization on Disabilities (ASCLA/NOD). Funds received from the award will be used to expand the library’s programming and to build a collection of materials for adults with developmental disabilities. Antioch Library staff will receive the award at the American Library Association’s annual conference in June 2008.

Project Second Chance offers adult literacy tutor training beginning Apr 11

Project Second Chance, located in Pleasant Hill, will offer tutor training to volunteers wishing to help adults learn to read, beginning with an introduction to the training on April 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Followed by an additional 12 hours of instruction on two successive Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 April 14 and 21.

The full 14-hour training is required to be eligible for an assignment. All tutor training sessions are held at the PSC office in Pleasant Hill. All tutoring materials are provided free of charge to program participants. Although it is not required, a voluntary donation of $15 is requested to offset the costs of training supplies and refreshments.

PSC tutors are 21 years of age or older. No degrees or diplomas are necessary and there are no tests required for tutors. Good tutors are empathetic, patient, able to give clear directions, and willing to learn new skills themselves.
PSC asks volunteers to:

- Make at least a one-year commitment to the program.
- Meet with their student at a public location, twice a week, for a 1 ½ hour tutoring session.
- Dedicate time for preparing lessons and for traveling to and from the tutoring site.

Diablo Valley Literacy Council offers literacy tutor training beginning March 1

The Diablo Valley Literacy Council will hold tutor training classes beginning Saturday March 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. followed by additional training sessions on Tuesday evening March 4th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday March 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please pass this info along to any friends interested in becoming a literacy tutor. Project Second Chance to hold 8th Annual Bookies Award Dinner, Mar 13

The 8th Annual Bookies Award Dinner, A Celebration of Books and the People Who Love Them, benefiting Project Second Chance, The Contra Costa County Library adult literacy program, will be held on Thursday March 13th at the Lafayette Park Hotel. The evening will begin with a no-host reception at 6:00, followed by dinner at 6:45.

This year’s special guest author is Tess Uriza Holthe, author of the best-selling novel, “When the Elephants Dance.” Tickets are $50 each and include admission, dinner, dessert and Rosenblum Cellars wines. Tickets can be purchased, with a credit card, by calling Fremont Bank at 510-723-5811 during regular business hours.

The event will feature a silent auction that will include a three-night stay in a 3 bedroom, 2-bath condo in Aptos.
