To the Editor:

Supervisor Susan Bonilla is reckless with taxpayers’ money.

Bonilla supported the 60% pay raise that the county supervisors gave themselves in late 2006.

Wheh Bonilla first became a supervisor, she spent $200,000 to set up a new office in Concord’s Todos Santos plaza. She could have had her predecessor’s office for no additional money.

That $200,000 could have fed 100 hungry people for a year.

When Bonilla was major of Concord, she voted to give police dispatchers a 21% raise.

In late 2006, Bonilla, again as mayor of Concord, votoed to give the Concord City Council a 72% pay raise.

As mayor of Concord, she approved ,in 2006, a no-bid contrict for garbage pick up. Garbage collection fees went up by 6.2% — triple the rate of inflation at the time. The no-bid contract was with Concord Disposal Services. The contract is for 15 years. The garbage company can extend the contract for an additional 5 years.

The owners of the disposal service are the Garaventa family. The family has contributed heavily to Bonilla’s political campaigns.

Bonilla has done nothing to eliminate the unfunded liability for health benefits for retired county workers. That liability can be between $1.7 and $2.6 billion. The annual county budget is about $1.2 billion.

When the county has trouble funding foster care programs and programs for the homeless, I have to blame Bonilla.

It’s time Bonilla became responsible with money. The funds she lavishes on herself could be helping truly needy people.

Bonilla suports Project Labor Agreements (PLA). These agreements call for the exclusive use of union labor. Thus PLA’s can raise costs by 30 to 50%.

Using union labor can be detrimental to small non-union firms, especially firms owned by women and minorities.
