Phillips scolds Gioia on safety

by BGR on September 22, 2009

Mister Phillips says Contra Costa Supervisor John Gioia (Dist I) was playing politics with public safety earlier this Summer when Gioia held a press conference to announce that he put more deputy sheriffs on the streets of North Richmond.

Phillips, set to challenge Gioia in 2010, said recently on his blog, “What Mr. Gioia did not announce is the daily six hour window of time when there are not any deputies patrolling North Richmond at all.”

Is it just me or does a LT. telling the public when tyhey aren’t protected seem like a really bad idea. MAC meeting follow the brown act so there must be minutes.

I attended the September North Richmond Municipal Advisory Committee meeting, and I was present when Lt. Bradley stated that there were no deputies on patrol in North Richmond during a certain window of time.

I can’t believe a LT. would give the exact hours there was no deputy. If he did, he ought to be fired.

During the September 2009 meeting of the North Richmond Municipal Advisory Committee, Contra Costa County Sheriff Lieutenant Ron Bradley, patrol division commander, said there is not a sheriff deputy on patrol 24 hours a day in North Richmond. Lieutenant Bradley also said what hours there is not a deputy on patrol. Supervisor Gioia was not at the meeting. I was.

The quote by Mr. Phillips that there is a “daily six hour window of time when there are not any deputies patrolling North Richmond at all” is just plain inaccurate. North Richmond is covered by a full time 24 hours/7 days a week beat deputy PLUS additional resident deputies who provide added levels of law enforcement for particular hours during the week. Additional sheriff deputy patrols were added in North Richmond beginning in May 2009 thereby increasing law enforcement coverage. Check the facts!
