Mexico may sue to strike down Arizona Prop 200

by BGR on January 31, 2005

The Arizona Central reports that Mexican officials may complain to an international human rights tribunal if U.S. courts fail to overturn Arizona’s Proposition 200. Prop 200 requires Arizonans to prove their U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, and to provide proof they are legal residents when applying for certain state benefits. State employees who fail to report undocumented immigrants face a possible $750 fine and four months in jail. Prop 200 passed laast year with 60 percent of the overall vote and according to some exit polls, 47 percent support from latino voters.
