As a life long fan of the storied (but not recently) Pittsburgh Pirate franchise, I made a bet this season with my friend Bernard Aboba, a Seattle Mariner fan, that the Pirates would lose more games this season than the Seattle club. The hapless Pirates, of course, clinched Thursday with a win by Mariners. So I won the bet, but Bernard still thinks the Mariners are the worse team; here’s why
“Wait until next year!,” Bernard crows. “The Mariners are so bad they can’t even succeed in finishing last!”
According to MLB stats, the Mariners have scored just 506 runs so far this year—thru 157 games—worst in the majors in 20+ years. The Pirates, with a losing record since Barry Bonds left for the San Francisco Giants late last Century, managed to lose more games but score 571 in the same period.
Even the gawd-awful ’62 Mets scored 617 runs. Their top hitters were:
Marv Throneberry: 244/306/426
Casey Kotchman: 217/280/336
Says Bernard, “If “Marvelous Marv” were on the 2010 Seattle Mariners, he would have the 3rd best OPS on the team after Russell Branyan and Ichiro.”
That’s how bad the Mariners are.
