I took one of these last year and found it interesting to get another glimpse of the area. Each of the hikes has a naturalist type with you that points out some of the birds, lizards and on my hike a snake (4′) that inhabits the area.
There are three hike areas, one in the southern area by Bailey Road (March 27), one in the hill area by the North Bart Station May 8th (which I intend to sign up for this year) and one in the central hill area by Willow Pass Road (April 17) that I took last year. The Willow Pass hill area includes a climb up the hills above Site 22A which is the Special Weapons (alias atomic weapons storage area)) and you can clearly see the double fenced area with the extra spot lights etc that were used during the Cold War Period.
On none of the hikes do you get to go into any of the buildings or into any of the bunkers although you do get quite close to a few on some of the path ways. You are kept on the tarmac roads or some of the more gravel lined paths by the central creek and the hill climb was found to be a little slow going by some of the group that I was in.
The hikes are free and you do need to file a waiver and get on the list as there are only 30 or so spots for each hike on a first come first serve basis.
