Gioia: Grinch that stole Halloween

by BGR on October 27, 2009

The PC police are out in full force this halloween politicizing obesity and tooth decay.

Contra Costa Supervisor John Gioia (D1) is playing the Grinch this Halloween as he uses his Supervisoral bully pulpit to trash traditional treats. Hand out unsharpened pencils or plastic rulers, instead.

If you’re a Contra Costa Supervisor, you better you have an off the books codicil to a Local One labor agreement ready behind the door to hand out to Rollie Katz when he and the other rowdy teens in purple T-shirts show up at your door with pillow cases full of tricks.

Where I come from, if you hand out a pencil on Halloween it gets thrown back at you. Next thing you know, John might suggest people should register their scary cats!

Here’s the e-mail sent sent from Gioia’s office (we checked its provenance with Kate).

Help our kids, don’t give candy on Halloween!

I’m encouraging parents to join the growing number of health conscience parents, like wife and I, who are giving away non-candy treats on Halloween. In fact, this is such an important health issue that I’ll be distributing bags of healthy Halloween treats to parents in West County. The supplies are intended to give parents some creative ideas of non-candy treats to give to the trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.

As part of my efforts to promote healthier lifestyles, I am making it my priority provide an alternative to the tradition of giving candy at Halloween.

Did you know that snack food corporations spend $12 billion annually to get us to eat junk food?

That’s a lot of money, much of it aimed at young children who are easily influenced. We need to fight these messages, and the change starts at home.

My wife Jennifer and I have started a family tradition. Instead of candies, we now give out pencils, stickers, and erasers on Halloween.

The Halloween bags I will be giving out at my office will include office supplies such as unsharpened pencils, erasers, fun stickers, non-toxic glue sticks, and other items.

20 to 30 Halloween bags will be given away each day on Wednesday, October 28th, and Thursday October 29th from 3 to 5 in the afternoon at my office, which is located at 11780 San Pablo Avenue, Suite D, in El Cerrito.

Sombody should ask Gioia what his kid really eats when he’s at school. Don’t ask, don’t tell?
