English Tutoring (CBET) funding in jeopardy

by BGR on July 20, 2007

On Tuesday, July 3rd, the Community-Based English Tutoring” (CBET) program at one of the two family literacy centers of Mt. Diablo Adult Education in Concord, California, was featured on KPIX TV. The clip focused on funding cuts to this vital program.

The CBET program was created in California in 1998 under voter-approved Proposition 227, to provide $50 million to school districts statewide to administer English language and tutoring skills courses to immigrant families. CBET classes teach parents and guardians the English skills they need to read to their children, help them with homework assignments and communicate with the teachers and staff at their children’s schools; basic skills to empower parents and guardians to support their children in their schooling and ensure their success in school. Here are the links to the KPIX CBS website where the broadcast is now archived:

Please share this broadcast as widely as possible. Though the first round of budgeting maintains the originally-authorized full funding of $50 million future CBET funding is not guaranteed. CBET advocates ask that you please contact your local State legislators in support of CBET programs across the State of California. For more info contact G.
