CoCo County Treasurer Russell Watts has released the Top 10 taxpayers list for 2011-2012.
According to Kris Hunt, Executive Director of the Contra Costa County Taxpayers Association, it’s good-news bad news affair.
Compared with 2010-2011, the top five and Shapell remain the same; Sunset Land Co. bumped up one spot to sixth; AT&T went from eighth place to seventh; and Seeno dropped from sixth to eighth. Walnut Creek Mutual took over the No. 10 spot from Pittsburg power plant Mirant Delta.
Overall, the Top 10 contributed 9.51 percent of the total property taxes paid, an increase from 7.24 percent in 2010-2011. But most of that bump comes from Chevron, which lost its property tax assessment appeal and saw its bill rose from $35.3 million in 2010-2011 to $71.6 million in 2011-2012.
All taxpayers paid $1.96 billion in property taxes in 2011-2012, a $41 million or 2.3 percent increase over the prior year.
