According to Justin Higgs, public affairs for Chevron: On May 3rd, CBS’s 60 Minutes ran a piece on a lawsuit against Chevron that is currently unfolding Ecuador. The story presented by 60 Minutes profiled this long running and incredibly complex case but did so in a biased fashion that was in many instances factually incorrect.

For those that watched the piece live or have since discovered it on the web, the following story outlines these inaccuracies and mischaracterizations.

For those interested in hearing the other side of the story, please take a moment to view the following video:

I saw your article about the Ecuador lawsuit against Chevron and 60 minutes coverage of it. I agree that the lawsuit is bogus and dangerous, but did you really have to bring the BMI into it? They are so biased that they have no credibility, at least with myself. Can’t someone just talk about facts? I’m sick of all this paid posturing.

~ EDITOR ASKS — Are you talking about Chevron or the paid shills and true believers that can’t bear debate from the Amazon Defense Coalition? I am curious why you think BMI is so uncredible other than some see them as the paid shill of Chevron. Do they hide their research or methods? Tell me why they are not a credible source, please.

Hi thanks for your post. However One very simple question for you. Are you presenting a VIDEO PAID FOR AND PRODUCED BY CHEVRON as unbiased? You are aware of their financing this correct?

I applaud 60 minutes on their reporting. To call this a smear is a stretch. The only real smears are the ones made of oil, that Ecuadorian communities must live with because of Chevrons toxic legacy.
I was struck Even the Chevron representatives couldn’t put a coherent argument together with the evidence that is so against them. On a personally disgusted note, I could not believe that Silvia Garrigo from Chevron had the audacity to compare her mascara and make-up to indigenous communities that must live in the toxic oil leftovers of Chevron. They really don’t have a leg left to stand on.
on a final note. You forgot to post the 60 minutes video and let your readers decide for themselves. here ya go.

~ EDITOR POINTS FINGER — Good eye. I have edited to note authorship. Thanks. The post was presented as Community Forum from information provided by representatives of Chevron. I don’t know why Justin would present false testimony to me or the public if it’s all verifiable. If Chevron desn’t feel like they got a fair shake on 60 Minutes, it’s right to counter with facts of their own. Calling their data names isn’t really argument. That’s like people saying, “Oh, he’s a Liberal, he can’t be telling the truth.”

That said, I swear…they didn’t pay me a thing! Really! I didn’t kill nobody in no rain forest, or pour oil down no drain, I swear on my mother’s grave at Arlington! I don’t want to end up in anyone’s Gulag; not even yours! You can take up your credentials issue and who paid for what with them.
