A Charlie Brown Christmas in Concord, Dec 5

by BGR on December 4, 2009

concord celebrates a charlie brown christmas, december 5 2009, concord california, todos santos plaza, holiday tree decorations, nativity scenes on public property

When I first saw that Concord had selected the rattiest looking tree in Todos Santos Plaza for use as its upcoming Holiday Christmas Tree I could not help but think of good ol Charlie Brown’s pathetic broken potted bare stick atop Snoopy’s dog house. Compare for your self below.

xmas_treeBut wait; Concord nailed it! It is indeed a Charlie Brown Christmas themed event to be held Saturday, December 5 beginning at dusk. Blankets will be collected for STAND Against Domestic Violence, and the Concord High Jazz Band will perform music from “Charlie Brown’s Christmas,” since the animated short’s most recent network airing was pre-empted by President Obama, Tuesday evening.

See Carol Longshore’s short history of the long tradition of decorating and lighting trees in Todos Santos during Christmas, in the back of the current Concordian (page 21).

Good Grief. It still looks like a dead fir tree.

This is the saddest most pathetic Christmas Tree I have ever seen in public. It does rival some rather revolting college dorm displays inspired by their occupants’ mental distractions of choice.

Then again, given the number of bars in the Todos Santos Square area, maybe the tree is intended to drive people to drink.
